CÔTE DES BASQUES, Biarritz – France (Thursday, May 24, 2018) – Europe’s best longboarders and a few international stars will make their way back to the birthplace of surfing in the region for the upcoming Longboard Pro Biarritz from June 7-10.A historic landmark for the birth and development of surfing in all of Europe, the city of Biarritz witnessed wave riders for the first time over 60 years ago, and has since supported the growing business and culture on the Basque coast and further.

A dynamic and ambitious city, Biarritz has hosted several WSL events in the past, including the women’s World Longboard Championship at the Roxy Jam, the women’s CT Roxy Pro which crowned Carissa Moore (HAW) as the 2011 World Champion and Stephanie Gilmore the 2012 World Champion, and more recently the Big Surf Invitational, a specialty event in a team format. The Longboard Pro Biarritz will see the return of professional surfing to the world famous côte des basques beach.

Stop No. 3 of 4 in this year’s European Longboard Qualifying Series, the Longboard Pro Biarritz will help decide the 2018 European Champions as well as the surfers qualifying for the prestigious World Longboard Championship next year.

French longboarders Antoine and Edouard Delpero have been dominating the European longboard scene for the past few years, and are currently third and second respectively in the region’s rankings. An event on home turf will be a great occasion for the two brothers to try to claim back the top spots while representing the local crowds as best as they can.

“I am extremely happy to see an event like this come back to Biarritz,” Edouard stated. “We’re going to see some of the best surfers in the world participate, and all the top Europeans for sure. It hasn’t happened since the Biarritz Surf Festival and I was only 15 back then. I’m stoked to be a part of it this time.”

The event will also run in conjunction with the BTZ Belza Classic, a 32-surfer format, men and women combined. Riding classic single-fin logs with no leash, the BTZ Belza Classic is a showcase of traditional longboarding in its purest essence and rewards style and grace over performance.

Created in 1989, BTZ (acronym for Biarritz) is a local clothing brand whose designs picture perfectly the spirit of the Basque Country, a French equivalent to California for its easy living lifestyle and surf culture. In their Bellevue store, BTZ features artists’ collections, beautiful surfboards and a selection of books.

This longboard festival in Biarritz wouldn’t be complete without entertainment for everyone and the organizers have put together a selection of sunset parties with LIVE music from 6-9 p.m.

The Longboard Pro Biarritz is scheduled from June 7-10, 2018 at Côte des Basques in Biarritz – France. For all photos, videos, news releases and results, visit worldsurfleague.com and the WSL app.

The Longboard Pro Biarritz is supported by the city Council of Biarritz, Région Nouvelle-Aquitaine, the Côte des Basques Surf Club, BTZ, Segafredo, Carlsberg and Virgin Radio.
